The Criterion Collection is an American video-distribution company that sells “important classic and contemporary films” to film aficionados. The big story today, was they released Matthew McConaughey’s Audition Tape For ‘Dazed And Confused’.
McConaughey was most recently seen at the Golden Globes Sunday night. In case you missed the awards show, he was donning a full beard. Matthew McConaughey became the subject of a JK Simmons joke by host Amy Poehler: “Or, as Matthew McConaughey calls him, ‘Just Keep Simmons.’”. McConaughey being the cool guy that he is, just went with it. Even though he is now a bonifed A-lister, he still comes off as down to earth as he was in the first role for which we remember him.
He starred in A Time To Kill, which was his first “lead role”, but where did we first see him on film? Let me help you, he was the super laid back 23-year-old in Dazed and Confused. He happened by chance to meet the casting director at the Hyatt bar where a friend of McConaughey’s used to bartend and give him free beer. True story!
That chance meeting led to this Dazed and Confused audition tape. It was released today by the Criterion Collection. Matthew McConaughey is seen here with one of the actors, Wiley Wiggins, who ended up playing one of the main characters. The MTV Headbangers Ball t-shirt is a nice touch as well!
In hindsight, could we imagine anyone but McConaughey playing Wooderson? All he did was coin one of the most famous phrases in film of all time, “alright, alright, alright”, and one of the most famous lines “that’s what I love about these high school girls…….. I get older, they stay the same age (laughs)”.
After the appearance in Dazed and Confused, McConaughey drove to Hollywood to become an actor. He then inexplicably booked two consecutive parts at his very first two auditions. Since then he has become a Golden Globe winner, as well as winning an Oscar for best actor at the Academy Awards last year.
Below are the Youtube videos. The new one of his audition, and the two famous scenes.
